PE

Our PE curriculum is designed to inspire all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. We firmly believe that opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

Through our alliance with West Lancashire School Sports Partnership, our curriculum is designed to ensure our pupils:

  • develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • are physically active for sustained periods of time
  • engage in competitive sports and activities
  • lead healthy, active lives.

Pupils in Key Stage 2 attend the local swimming pool for lessons and presently Upper Key Stage 2 children have the opportunity to experience outdoor pursuits during an activity residential.

Intent, Implementation and Impact of PE

Swimming

Children in Key Stage 2 attend swimming lessons with swimming coaches at Tarleton Academy. We aim for children to leave Newburgh School at the end of Year 6 with the following proficiencies:

1) Able to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres.

2) Use a range of strokes effectively (for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke).

3) Able to perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.

Children need to bring swimming costume/trunks, swimming hat, towel, goggles (if needed) in a named plastic bag.

For the Academic year 2024-2025 Year 5 and 6 children will attend swimming on Thursday afternoons from 14th September. Years 4 will attend swimming on Thursday afternoons at a date to be confirmed. Those children in Years 5 and 6 who do not meet our proficiencies will continue to attend swimming lessons with Year 4. If your child is a reluctant swimmer it may help to go swimming as a family to support the development of their confidence in the water to help them meet the essential criteria as quickly as possible.

Cycling at Newburgh

We believe all children should be able to ride a bike. We run two courses at Newburgh to support this.

Mini Wheelers

When children are in Reception and Year 1 they participate in Mini-Wheelers (we also extend this offer to children in Year 2 not yet able to ride a bike. Mini-Wheelers teaches children the skills to ride a balance bike, developing their core muscles, observing and steering skills. These are the foundation skills for riding a bike.

Bikeability

When children reach Year 5 they are invited to participate in Bikeability. Bikeability has two stages; stage 1 is on the school playground, stage 2 is on the road.

Stage 1:

On completion of stage 1 children will be able to:-

  • Fit their own bike helmet.
  • Carry out a simple bike check.
  • Get on their bike, start cycling, stop and get off.
  • Ride their bike using appropriate gears.
  • Make their bike go where they want, including moving around objects safely.
  • Control the bike with one hand.
  • Stop quickly if needed.
  • Look all around while riding, including behind without wobbling.

Children who complete stage 1 are able to move on to stage 2.

Stage 2:

On completion of stage 2 children will be able to:-

  • Start and finish a journey by road, including passing parked or slower moving vehicles and side roads.
  • Make a U-turn.
  • Identify and react to hazards in the road.
  • Signal your intentions to other road users when someone needs to know what you are doing.
  • Understand where to ride on the road.
  • Use junctions, including turning left and right into major and minor roads.
  • Decide whether a cycle lane will help your journey.
  • Use the Highway Code, particularly when it comes to understanding road signs.

Those children in Year 5 unable to participate fully in Bikeability will be invited again in Year 6 to participate.
